Canine Companions for Independence- CCI
Non- profit organization that provides at no cost trained service dogs, skilled companion dogs (for children and persons with
mental disabilities) hearing dogs and facility dogs (who work in hospitals, schools, etc.). National center in California and 5
regional centers that provide services and advance training for the dogs and then Team Training to the handler/dog teams
before graduation.

Challenger Jamboree – Norfolk, VA

DAV- Disabled American Veterans
Group of military veterans with disabilities across the country formed into chapters. Hold monthly meetings as well as assist
with transportation to and from VA hospitals for veterans in need of transportation. Local support for Veterans Day and

The Mid Atlantic Wheelchair Athletic Association
A Non-Profit 501 (c) (3) organization relying on the fund raising initiatives of its members as well as charitable donations by community partners. We enrich the athletic opportunities for individuals with neurological/orthopedic disabilities who use and do not use a wheelchair. The Mid-Atlantic Wheelchair Athletic Association (MAWAA) was established on February 13, 1973 under the name Virginia Wheelchair Athletic Association. The mission of this organization is to provide information about sports recreation opportunities for persons with physical disabilities and to provide competitive opportunities for the same. The Mid-Atlantic Wheelchair Athletic Association sponsors Paralympic style games each year for persons six years old and older with permanent neurological/orthopedic disabilities who could benefit from athletic competition. The association also sponsors and coordinates an area wheelchair basketball team, Shenandoah Valley High Rollers.

Pleasant View, Inc
From this beginning, Pleasant View has grown into an organization which serves over 70 people in residential settings and
80 people in day support services in 8 locations throughout the city of Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and beyond.
Residential services provided range from structured home based care on the intermediate care level for people with severe and profound disabilities to independent apartment living and home living. Residences include larger living arrangements such as the 15-person Harrison Residence, small community based homes for 4 to 6 people, and 10 apartments. Day support services include highly structured center based programs for people with severe needs, community based programs of volunteer service, employment enclaves in which staff members and 2 or more clients fill jobs in the community, and individual
supported employment. Pleasant View also provides a ministry program that creates meaningful interactions between those
we serve and the wider community.

Wheelchair Pageants/Programs
Ms. Wheelchair America
Organization that brings titleholders from each state with a state program to compete for the title of Ms. Wheelchair
America. The crowing event is a week long, held in late July or early August every year. Each woman is judged on poise,
platform, speech, and judging interviews. The titleholder will represent all women with disabilities in wheelchairs nationwide
during her year long reign.
